Not the sum of all our knowledge, not the juggernaut we imagine we are, but the beautiful and delicate system of one-line poems that best express our thought in moments of crisis. As we all know, English is great at showing our inner thoughts and emotions in microcosm, so we can never understand it from the outside, and yet here is one part of it that perfectly illustrates what it is, and why it’s so good at expressing the things that are so difficult to say.
I hate this bag, because it’s really tight, and you can’t get your arms in, but it’s hard to carry.
I’m a fan of this sort of thing. I like puzzles and videos and still photos that cause me to ponder. I enjoy exploring this aspect of the human mind as much as I enjoy the abstract, and the more I do, the more I see that we think not so differently from each other. We fear and worry and are delighted and frustrated by the same things. If we could just figure out a way to get more of them down on paper or film, I think we’d find out a lot more about ourselves.
One of the things I’ve started thinking a lot about lately is how we, human beings, might be in our own minds. Not just our inner thoughts, but our inner lives. I think there’s a need for people to be with themselves on a more regular basis. Not that we’re not alone, but when you get right down to it, we spend more time with our thoughts than we do with other people. We’re alone in the store with the products in it, we’re alone in our cars with the radio, and we’re alone in the house with the TV. We make important decisions all by ourselves, and most of us spend more time thinking about the things we do than about the things we don’t.
